Tornaesium & Gazeium, Lugduni (Lyon); 1548 Dimensions 3 x 5 1/8"; 787 pages; 22 lvs. Leather-bound, four-banded spine with elaborate gilded decoration There is some leather wear, underlining, coloring, and marginalia. Latin text Early Christian writer Lucius Caecilius Firmianus signo Lactantius (c. 250–c. 325), served as both a tutor and advisor to Roman Emperor Constantine I, helping to shape his early adoption of Christian religious doctrine, and a teacher to his son Crispus. The Institutiones Divinae ("The Divine Institutes"), an apologetic essay meant to prove Christianity's veracity and reasonableness to pagans, is his most significant work. Best recognized for his apologetic writings, Lactantius was dubbed the "Christian Cicero" by humanists who read his works extensively during the Renaissance. The poem The Phoenix, which is based on the tale of the phoenix from Egypt and Arabia, is another work that is frequently credited to Lactantius. Modern academics have discovered literary evidence in the poem that suggests the author had a Christian interpretation of the eastern tale as a sign of resurrection, even though the work does not overtly feature Christian themes.
