Description: De Fato libri novem (Concerning fate) by Serina Venice, ex officina Iordani Zileti ; 1563 First and only edition Size 7 3/4 by 10 3/4" [10] + 168 lvs + 12 lvs of index, woodcut printer's device on title page (with period manuscript writings) Woodcut initials. Bound in half leather, lacking a spine and front cover lower corner; text in Latin Ref. Adams S-1218. Scarce. In order to explore the nature of fate, the book looks at events that are determined by necessity or casualty as well as contingencies, which combine necessity and casualty. The book opens with a dedication letter to Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga, the main papal legate at the Council of Trent. It is followed by a Latin poetry and the Perioche, which are summaries of the chosen passages found in Serina's nine volumes of work, edited by Girolamo Maggi.
Serina was a Brescia native who worked as a theologian, philosopher, and member of the Order of Saint Gerome of Fiesole. Three times he was elected General of his Congregation. He studied philosophy, theology, and metaphysics for forty years at the University of Bologna, where he passed away in 1593. Maggi, a polymath, was born in Anghiari, Tuscany, in 1523, and tragically perished in Constantinople, Turkey, in 1572 from strangling at the hands of the Turks as a result of Famagosta's unsuccessful surrender to the Ottoman army in Cyprus. The nature of fate is explored in the book by examining events that are predetermined by necessity or casualty as well as contingencies, which combine necessary and incidental factors.
