Originating in Cres, Franciscus Patricius (also known as Francesco Patrizi; 1529–1597) was a physicist and philosopher from the Republic of Venice. He was seen as an opponent of Aristotelianism and a supporter of Platonism. According to what he says in his Paralleli militari, he is descended from the Patrizi family of Siena. There are differing accounts of his national origin, with descriptions ranging from Italian to Croatian. He is generally known as Franjo Petris or Frane Petric in Croatia. Petris was the Cres name for his family.
