Francesco Patrizi, also known as Patrizzi, was an Italian writer, statesman, Catholic bishop, and humanist. His full name was Franciscus Patricius Senensis, and he lived from Siena in 1413 to Gaeta in 1492. Francesco, a follower of Filelfo and a member of the Patrizi family of Siena, was complicit in the 1456 plot against the Republic of Siena, which resulted in his banishment. While residing in Verona in 1459, he made the acquaintance of several humanists, among them Antonio Brognanigo. His personal friend Pope Pius II named him bishop of Gaeta on October 4, 1463, a post he maintained until his passing. He served as governor of Foligno from May 21, 1461, for a brief length of time, and then in the Papal State. In 1465, he was in Florence representing Ferdinand I of Naples. During those years, he was a regular visitor to Neapolitan social circles and gained recognition for his sophisticated interpretations of Him. Among his principal works, composed in Latin, is De Regno et regis institutione (1519), which deals with friendship (in a manner akin to Cicero's most well-known work) and was only translated forty years later, appearing among the Aldine in 1559 under the title Il sacro Regno de'l gran Patritio, of the true regiment, and of the true happiness of the prince, and humane beatitude.
