Description: [GREAT ALEXANDER]A book published in October by QUINTUS CURTIUS [RUFUS] RUFI HISTORIARUM MAGNI ALEXANDRI MACEDONIS. Francisco Modio, ed. Quintus Curtius, Cologne, Maternum Cholinum, 1579, pp. (14), 343, (16), 181 (2). Initials cut out of wood. 8vo, overlapping vellum, 4 1/8 by 6 1/2", Latin text. W.G. van der Tak's bookplate on the upper pastedown The vellum is stained, the upper part of the spine is absent, and the maculature is medieval. Quintus Curtius Rufus was a Roman historian who lived most likely in the first century. He wrote Historiae Alexandri Magni, or "Histories of Alexander the Great," or more formally, Historiarum Alexandri Magni Macedonis Libri Qui Supersunt. This is his sole known and surviving work. "All the Books That Survive of the Histories of Alexander the Great of Macedon." There's a lot of it missing. There is nothing certain known about him other than his name being on the manuscripts. For this reason alone, philologists have concluded that he had a different historical identity, to which the passage of time has severed the connection. There are a few theories. Different authors consider them with differing degrees of reliability. Quintus Curtius Rufus, the historian, maintains his anonymity in the meantime.
