Description: Commentarius Masoreticus Tiberias sive This academic commentary by well-known Christian Hebraist Johannes Buxtorf explores the development and history of the Masorah (codified vowels and vocalization of the Hebrew text), and it was meant to be a companion to his well-known Biblia Rabbinica. The book was controversial because it went against the previous Hebrew scholar Elia Levita's (1469–1549) interpretation of the Masorah's later origin. BUXTORF, J. Basel; 1665. Buxtorf's son Johannes Buxtorf the Younger enhanced and expanded his father's work in this 1665 edition. 19th-century hardbound book Excellent condition with the exception of some fading and cover wear. Dimensions: 6.5 by 8"; text mostly in Hebrew and Latin Being a member of an Orientalist family, Johannes Buxtorf (Latin: Johannes Buxtorfius) (1564–1629) was a renowned Hebraist and professor of Hebrew at Basel for 39 years. He was referred to as the "Master of the Rabbis". His enormous work, De Synagoga Judaica (1st ed., 1603), meticulously records early modern German Jewish life and traditions.
