Description: [The Latin Bible]. Sacramentum biblii Vulgatae editionis. Edit. Clause VIII. Six sections in five volumes, Cologne, J. Naulaeus, 1679 This so-called Sistine Vulgate was the first edition edited by a pope. The Sixtine Vulgate, also known as the Sistine Vulgate (Latin: Vulgata Sixtina), is the edition of the Vulgate, a fourth-century Latin translation of the Bible that was largely written by Jerome. It was prepared by a commission on the orders of Pope Sixtus V and edited by himself. It was the first edition of the Vulgate authorised by a pope. Its official recognition was short-lived; the edition was replaced. Five distinct engraved title-pages, original uniformed vellum bindings with manuscript titles to the spines, slightly soiled vellum, very good interior . The Vulgate was to be printed as accurately as possible after the Council of Trent ruled in 1546 that it was authoritative and authentic. At the time, there was no Vulgate version that the Catholic Church had formally accepted. Twenty years later, Pius V established a commission to create an official Vulgate version, and work on that project got underway. Gregory XIII, his successor, chose not to carry on the job, nonetheless.
