One volume with three parts. 1693–1694 in London 8vo: 4.5 by 7" later, mottled calf embellished with gilt; joints strengthened, back cover detached, but otherwise sound within. Written in English. Samuel Butler (1613–1680) wrote the ferocious satirical poem Hudibras in a mock-heroic style. It was published in three parts in 1663, 1664, and 1678. The action takes place in the final years of the Interregnum, roughly in 1658–1660, just before Charles II was crowned king again in May 1660. The narrative concludes with a clever and thorough proclamation that women are superior to males. It follows Hudibras, a knight and colonel in the Parliamentary army, as he is repeatedly vanquished, occasionally by the bravery and talent of women. Hudibras is renowned for its long publishing history. From the 1660s until the First World War era (see below), it was published almost continuously by a variety of publishers and editors. There are few many English verse satires of this length (more than 11,000 lines) that have had such a lengthy and significant life in print, with the exception of Byron's masterwork Don Juan (1819–24). "The satire delighted the royalists, but it was more of a parody of traditional literary form and a critique of outdated ideas and modern morals than it was an attack on the puritans."
