Description: Sappho and Anacreon. The poet Sans Fard (= F. Gacon) wrote the Odes of Anacleon and Sappho in verse for the French. Fritsch et Bohm, Rotterdam, 1712 (2), CCXI, (1), 354, (5) p., Original calf, title-vignette, engraved frontispiece by B. BERNARDI after B. PICART. Above pastedown bookplate; vintage notes on verso frontispiece Rare in size, 4" by 6 1/3". Written in French Lyric poet Sappho of Lesbos lived from approximately 620 to 570 BCE. Her poetry was so well-liked in classical Greece that centuries after her passing, her likenesses could be found on statues, coins, and ceramics. There is not much of her work left, but what is left suggests she was gay. The phrases "lesbian" and "sapphic," which allude to female same-sex relationships, were coined as a result of her name.
