Two sections in one volume (40), 1024 pages (36). featuring twelve full-page portraits of the emperors, an etched headpiece (coat of arms), and a frontispiece. Handsome gold coat of arms of UTRECHT adorning both covers, encircled by gilt-tooled borders including miniature gilt coats of arms of the city in the corners, and a gilt spine. Original vellum. Dimensions: 5 1/4 by 8 1/4 "; excellent condition; some foxing; no ties Latin text Roman historian Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, also known as Suetonius, lived from approximately AD 69 to AD 122. He wrote during the early Imperial period of the Roman Empire. De vita Caesarum, a collection of biographies of 12 later Roman emperors, including Julius Caesar and Domitian, is probably his most significant surviving work. Suetonius also wrote on politics, oratory, the day-to-day activities of Rome, and the lives of notable writers such as grammarians, historians, and poets. Many of these books have been lost, but a couple have survived in part.
