The Sacred Congregation of the Index, a former Dicastery of the Roman Curia, maintained a list of books that were considered heretical or immoral. This list, known as the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (English: Index of Forbidden Books), changed periodically, and Catholics were prohibited from printing or reading them, with the local bishop having final say. The list could be adopted or modified by laws that Catholic states could pass and implement. The period covered by the Index was 1560–1966. It blacklisted publishers and outlawed hundreds of book titles, including the writings of Europe's intellectual elites.
