Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8 BC), popularly known as Horace in the English-speaking world, was the most prominent Roman lyric poet during Augustus's (sometimes called Octavian's) reign. According to Quintilian, the rhetorician, "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words." His Odes were among the few Latin poems worth reading.
