Blamire, with two hand-colored aquatint plates ("A Saxon Entertainment" and "The Peacock Feast") and an engraved title. Page of titles engraved. first half-calf. Lower end of the binding is missing, and the back cover is detached. excellent condition inside. 137 pages Dimensions: 9 1/2 by 12 1/4"; English text. Warner was a godly and well-known English antiquarian. Leading the way in a scholarly movement that emerged over the final three centuries of the eighteenth century, this study was among the first to investigate the history of early English cookery. Includes Warner's thorough introduction; The Forme of Cury, which is a collection of recipes derived from an old vellum roll believed to have been compiled by Richard II's master cooks around 1390; Ancient Cookery, A.D. 1381, another set of recipes derived from the same vellum roll; "Ancient Cookery," a compilation of recipes derived from a fifteenth-century manuscript, but which most likely dates from a much earlier period; Ancient Recipes to Preserve Fruits "from the mid-Seventeenth Century"; and a description of the enthronement feasts of George Neville as Archbishop of York during King Edward IV and William Warham as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1504.
