Following an impressive performance in the War of 1812, Porter led the West India Squadron, which worked to put an end to piracy. Puerto Rican authorities mistreated one of his officers. Porter launched a counteroffensive, took control of a fort, and asked for and got an apology. He was judged guilty of this hostile act against a friendly power, court martialed, and given a six-month suspension. Feeling that his adversaries had unfairly penalized him, he submitted his resignation. This is the entire trial transcript, including Porter's defense.
