Pinkerton (1819–1884) is most known for founding the Pinkerton National Detective Agency in the United States and for allegedly foiling an attempt to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln in 1861. He supplied military intelligence, including wildly erroneous estimates of the enemy's troop strength, to General George B. McClellan of the Army of the Potomac and the Union Army during the Civil War. His agents were crucial in breaking strikes following the war, especially in the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. This function was carried out by Pinkerton men even after their founder passed away.
