An interesting story of this Grenadier Guard investigating the aftermath of the first Armenian Massacres from 1894 to 1896 while traveling around Asia Minor and the Middle East. In addition to traveling widely throughout the Ottoman Empire to many Armenian and Kurdish regions, the author—who would go on to serve as the British Intelligence Officer during the Boxer Rebellion in China—also traveled to Iran, Iraq, Central Asia, and Western China before taking the Trans-Siberian Railway to England. John Bigham, 1st Viscount Mersey, was a renowned British jurist best known for supervising the RMS Titanic sinking investigation. His eldest son was Bigham, 2nd Viscount Mersey. As he makes his way through the crumbling Ottoman Empire, he notes the appalling circumstances for travel, diseases, and the attitudes of the locals.
