John Bigham, 1st Viscount Mersey, was a renowned British jurist best known for supervising the RMS Titanic sinking investigation. His eldest son was Bigham, 2nd Viscount Mersey. As he makes his way through the crumbling Ottoman Empire, he notes the appalling circumstances for travel, diseases, and the attitudes of the locals.
