Description: A PAIR OF 15TH / 17TH CENTURY OTTOMAN / MAMLUK GEOMETRIC MARBLE MOSAIC WALL PANELS, EGYPTof rectangular form with red, black and white tesserae with interlocking quatrefoils, and multi pointed stars forming a complex geometric pattern, the panel surrounded by a white stone inner and black stone outer frame,118cm high x 40cm wide x 5cm deep (2)For a similar wall panel with geometric interlace, catalogued as 15th century, see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Accession Number: 1970.327.8A 14th / 15th century Mamluk hardstone mosaic panel was sold at Christies, New York, The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection, 23 October 2022, lot 668, $138,000.It can be difficult to precisely date these panels, as the distinctive geometric style was in use during the Mamluk period but continued after the advent of the Ottomans in 1517, even with their changing architectural styles. The complexity of the design of the present pair of panels suggests an early date. The shape and size of the panels indicate that they would have been placed against the base of a wall, and similar hardstone geometric mosaics decorate the walls of important Mamluk buildings in Cairo, including mosques and secular palaces. For example those found on the early Mamluk tomb and mosque complex of Sultan Qala'un, and in the tomb and mosque complex of Sultan al-Ashraf Barsbay in the Northern cemetery. Evidence that this style continued under the Ottomans can be found in the decoration of the walls at the Mosque of Sheikh al-Burdayni, built in 1616-1627AD.
