Description: SUATONIUS (Caesar II). Ex rec. J.G. Graevii, J. Gronovii, & F. Oudendorpii, nec non ined. C.A. Dukeri adnot. S. Luchtmans, Leyden, 1751. One volume (40), 1024 pages, two parts. featuring twelve full-page portraits of the emperors, an etched headpiece (coat of arms), and a frontispiece. Original vellum with a miniature coat of arms in each corner and a gold floral border surrounding the ornate coat of arms of Amsterdam on both sides. (Prize and ties absent; gold accents on spine fading). Dimensions: 5 1/3 by 8 1/3 "; excellent condition; no knots Latin text Roman historian Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, also known as Suetonius, lived from approximately AD 69 to AD 122. He wrote during the early Imperial period of the Roman Empire. De vita Caesarum, a collection of biographies of 12 later Roman emperors, including Julius Caesar and Domitian, is probably his most significant surviving work. Suetonius also wrote on politics, oratory, the day-to-day activities of Rome, and the lives of notable writers such as grammarians, historians, and poets. Many of these books have been lost, but a couple have survived in part.
