Publius Vergilius Maro, commonly known as Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan era who lived from 70 BC to 19 BC. The Eclogues (also known as the Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid are three of the most well-known poetry in Latin literature that he wrote. He was once credited with writing several small poems that are collected in the Appendix Vergiliana. However, contemporary researchers question whether he actually wrote these pieces. Virgil's writings have had a significant impact on Western literature, particularly Dante's Divine Comedy, where Virgil serves as the author's tour guide to Purgatory and Hell. One of the greatest poets of ancient Rome has long been considered to be Virgil. His Aeneid has been regarded as the national epic of classical Rome ever since it was written.
