Origin: from Ferdinand Hoffmann von Grünbühel and Strechau's (1540–1607) library, bearing his autograph and the Memento Mori phrase "Zeittlichs Zergankhlich" along with the year 1581. Hoffmann was a native of Styria and served as president of Emperor Rudolf II's court chambers, where he was granted estates in Moravia. The book collection was thereafter continued to grow by Hoffmann's successors. The collection was acquired by Prince Ferdinand von Dietrichstein in 1664, and as a result, it was included in the renowned Dietrichstein-Nikolsburg Library, some of which were sold at auction in the early 1930s.
