His name is sometimes anglicized as Petrarch. Many people believe that Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters marked the beginning of the Italian Renaissance in the fourteenth century and the development of Renaissance humanism. Pietro Bembo developed the modern Italian language model in the sixteenth century, drawing inspiration from the writings of Petrarch, Giovanni Boccaccio, and, to a lesser degree, Dante Alighieri. Petrarch would eventually be approved by the Accademia della Crusca as an example of Italian style. Throughout Europe in the Renaissance, Petrarch's sonnets were highly regarded and frequently emulated, serving as a template for lyrical poetry. In addition, he is credited with creating the notion of the "Dark Ages," which is now deemed false and misleading by the majority of contemporary academics.
