Description: LOGIQUE OU ART DE PENSER (Logic Port Royal) The book exhibits the particular tone of sincere piety that made the Port Royal movement famous, and the authors were its leaders. The most well-known logic text of the seventeenth century was La Logique, which also established the format for logic manuals for the following two centuries. Specifically, the way it broke the topic down into the theories of conception, judgment, reasoning, and procedure developed a psychologistic approach that ruled the area until Frege's time. La Logique, which developed from Descartes' Regulae rather than Aristotle's Prior Analytics, was firmly and deliberately Cartesian, a manual on procedure rather than a study of formal logic in the strict sense. Despite this, it made significant technical advancements, chief among them being the differentiation it made between a term's comprehension and extension (which was a precursor to Hamilton's distinction between intension and extension and a development of the medieval distinction between significatio and suppositio); the quasi-mathematical treatment it gave to the rules of distribution, conversion, and syllogistic; and the formulation of the deduction theorem. 473 pages with a table of contents, original vellum binding, and the manuscript title on the front cover and spine. Dimensions: 3 3/4 by 6 1/3 "; excellent condition Written in French
