Castore Durante, a physician, botanist, and poet of the Italian Renaissance, was also known by the name Castor Durante da Gualdo (1529–1590). Giovan Diletto Durante was a jurist and his father. Among his five siblings was one called Pollùce (Pollux). After earning his medical degree from Perugia in 1567, he worked as a physician in Gualdo Tadino. Later, he became a professor at the "Archiginnasio della Sapienza," which is now known as the Sapienza University of Rome. Cardinal Girolamo Rusticucci recommended him for the position of senior physician in Pope Sixtus V's court. He was buried in the Franciscan monastery's church after passing away in Viterbo in 1590. A account of medicinal plants from Europe and the Indies (East and West) can be found in Herbario Nuovo, which was published in 1585. Leonardo Parasole da Norcia (d. 1570) illustrated the first editions, while his wife, the engraver Isabella Parasole, created the woodcuts in the third edition. There are talks of the habitat and medical applications of each species in both Latin and Italian. Eleven Italian, German, and Spanish editions were published.
