Description: Oil on canvas, finely sized tableau from the Divine Comedy of Dante and Virgil's descent into hell. Large depiction of Dante and Virgin crossing the River Styx while the City of the Undead burns in the background and the Barque is encircled by the tortured souls of Hell. The design is remarkably similar to Delacroix's well-known piece from 1822. There is some surface dryness and potential for enhancement and restoration, if desired. Affixed to its original antique gilded frame, signed on the verso. Dimensions: approximately 95 x 85 cm when framed
