English scholar Joseph Spence (1699–1748) traveled extensively over Europe for most of his life, studying both literature and anecdotes. He composed a great deal of his most notable works during these trips, and he also drew inspiration for other books and lectures he would later deliver at Oxford. Spence became lifelong friends with Alexander Pope, who had a great influence on his writing. Spence became an Oxford professor of modern history in 1742 after being elected to the Oxford Chair of Poetry in 1728, partly because of this friendship. Following the publication of Polymetis, Spence used his earnings to indulge his passion for gardening. Until his passing, he produced both published and unpublished literary works.
