DE ABSTINENTIA AB ANIMALIBUS NECANDIS [...] ITEM PORPHYRII [..].The 1655 publication, EIUSDEM LIBER DE VITA PYTHAGORAE [..] by EPICTETUS Cantabrigiae, is a significant academic edition of Epictetus Enchiridius and Prophyrius, with an early vegetarianism treatise. [8]-495-[17], [2]-285-[11]-87-[15] pages. 8vo: 4 3/4 by 7 1/4" original binding on vellum. First part title and general title are in black and red. Parallel columns of writing in Greek and Latin. In excellent condition. Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher who lived from about 50 to 135 AD. He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey), and he spent his whole childhood in Rome prior to being banished, at which point he relocated to Nicopolis in northwest Greece. His student Arrian recorded and disseminated his teachings in his Discourses and Enchiridion. Philosophy is a way of life, not only a theoretical field, as Epictetus taught. Epictetus believed that we should accept everything that occurs in a calm and detached manner because nothing outside of our control can control it. On the other hand, people are accountable for their own deeds, which they may scrutinize and manage with strict self-control.
