Description: Large circa 1780 south eastern prospect of Landguard Fort, Suffolk, oil on canvas. Extensive topographical view of the fort battery that would become the home of the Duke of York's first English Marines. Good condition for its age and excellent condition. The frame bears a plaque stating it is a copy of Gainsboroughs work when he was relatively unknown and living in Ipswich. He painted several versions all of which are believed to have been destroyed. This is the earliest known example and was painted during Gainsboroughs period. The artist is not known. Measurements: 40" x 27" framed approx
