Italian grammarian and playwright Francesco Alunno (also known as De Bailo; 1485–1556) lived in Ferrara. Alunno wrote and published a number of remarkable lexicographic works while working as a calligraphy and mathematics instructor in Udine and then in Venice. His "La fabbrica del mondo" contains a comprehensive lexicon of Petrarch, Dante, Boccaccio, and other Italian writers. Alunno's first book, "Le osservationi sopra il Petrarca," was originally published in 1539. "Le osservationi," a comprehensive glossary of Petrarchan terms arranged alphabetically, offers definitions for every term or challenging phrase, a passage from Petrarch illustrating its usage in context, guidance on when to use alternate spellings, and page numbers referring to the printed version of Petrarch's works released by Gherardo that same year. The author made numerous corrections and added a great deal of enrichment to this second edition. A few letters attesting to Alunno's relationships with Venetian writers and printers (such as Girolamo Ruscelli) have also been added. Moreover, there is a fun fictional epistolary exchange between Petrarch and the author, which starts with Petrarch's letter and ends with Alunno's response.
