Latin text Francisco de Toledo was a Spanish Jesuit priest, theologian, professor at the Roman College, and an expert in biblical exegesis. He lived from 1532 to 1596. In 1593, he became the first Jesuit to be made a cardinal. Toledo was trained under Domingo de Soto and taught philosophy at the University of Salamanca before joining the faculty in 1555. After receiving his priestly ordination at Salamanca in 1556, he joined the Jesuit order two years later, in 1558. Following a brief time of spiritual development, Diego Laynez, the Superior General, summoned him to Rome, where there was a dire shortage of professors for the nascent Roman College. Toledo was the prefect of studies at the quickly expanding university and taught philosophy (1559–1562), scholasticism and moral theology (1562–1569), all of which he accomplished with success. He released several commentary on Aristotle's writings in the 1570s. He oversaw the revision of the Latin Vulgate, known as the Clementine Vulgate, which was published in 1598. It was based on the Sistine Vulgate, which was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1590. After his death in 1596, he was laid to rest in the Santa Maria Maggiore. Gillis van den Vliete, a Flemish sculptor, sculpted the grave monument in 1598 based on a design by Giacomo della Porta.
