English painter Eliot Hodgkin was born in Purley Lodge in Purley-on-Thames, close to Pangbourne, Berkshire, on June 19, 1905, and passed away on May 30, 1987. In the late 1920s, Hodgkin started painting with oil, and in 1937, he switched to tempera. A large number of his most well-known pieces are intricate still lifes, painted in tempera or oil.
