He is regarded as one of the most influential academics of the northern Renaissance. He was a well-known classical scholar who wrote in pure Latin while serving as a Catholic priest. He was referred to as "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists" and was known as the "Prince of the Humanists" by other humanists. He produced significant new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament using humanist text-editing techniques, posing issues that would have an impact on the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. In addition, he authored numerous additional works, including Julius Exclusus, Copia: Foundations of the Abundant Style, On Free Will,[6] In Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, and On Civility in Children. Erasmus lived in a time when the European religious Reformation was expanding. He was devoted to changing the abuses committed by the Church and its clerics from inside and stayed a member of the Catholic Church throughout his life. Additionally, he adhered to the synergism theory, which some Calvinist Reformers rejected in favor of the monergism theory. Scholars from both groups were dissatisfied and even incensed by his media-friendly, middle-of-the-road approach. While getting ready to return to Brabant, Erasmus unexpectedly passed away in Basel in 1536. He was buried in Basel Minster, the city's former cathedral.
