Description: 1844 JOHN BARROW, London, "Life Voyages & Expansions of Sir Francis Drake" Embossed title to the spine of the original publishing cloth of High-ways & Dry-ways or, the BRITTANIA AND CONWAY TUBULAR BRIDGES, London, 1849; size 5 by 6 3/4"; excellent condition; content in English The most famous feat of English privateer and adventurer Sir Francis Drake, who lived from approximately 1540 to 28 January 1596, was his solo circumnavigation of the globe, which he accomplished between 1577 and 1580. This was the third circumnavigation in total and the first in English. He is also well-known for having taken part in the early English slave expeditions led by John Lovell and his cousin Sir John Hawkins. From humble beginnings as a seaman, he rose to the rank of vice-admiral and participated in the battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Drake was raised in the family of a relative who was a well-known sea captain in Plymouth, William Hawkins, at a young age. He sailed for the first time on his own initiative in 1572, privateering the Spanish Main. The circumnavigation of Drake started on December 15, 1577. He claimed New Albion by crossing the Pacific Ocean, which was up to that point a territory exclusively of Spanish interest. On his way, he pillaged coastal villages and ships in search of supplies and treasure. He returned to England on September 26, 1580. Drake obtained his knighthood from Elizabeth I in 1581 while traveling on his galleon, the Golden Hind.
