Description: Paolo Giovio, "LA VITA DI SFORZA," Giovanni de 'Rossi, Venice, no date [1556] Size: 4 1/4 by 6 1/4 "; vellum binding; xylographic initials on the frontispiece; Mercury grasping the caduceus, resting his left foot on the world within a figured frame printer's device. Light foxing. Ludovico Maria Sforza (1452–1508), referred to as "the Moor" or Ludovico il Moro. The Italian Renaissance aristocrat Guicciardini referred to as the "Arbiter of Italy" was the Duke of Milan from 1494 until 1499. His rise to prominence coincided with his nephew Gian Galeazzo Sforza's passing. He was the fourth son of Francesco I. Sforza and a member of the Sforza family. During the Milanese Renaissance, he was a patron of the arts and commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to paint The Last Supper. He was also a major player in the Italian Wars. Paolo Giovio, an Italian physician, historian, biographer, and bishop, was born in 1483 and died in 1552 (latin: Paulus Jovius).
