Oil on panel signed in AV monogram. As a student at the Royal Academy of Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Verhaeren studied the old masters so as to perfect his technique in still life painting. He went on to participate in many Parisian and Berlin exhibitions starting in 1889; and was awarded a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. In this painting, the artist uses varying thicknesses of material to highlight the dimensions of each element of the scene. By slowly reducing light, the still life takes on depth.
