The Holy See has long recognized the basis for his canonization. His published writings address Scripture, doctrine, ethics, biography, and church history in addition to austere theology. His writings on asceticism, however, are what made him most famous. Numerous languages have translations for the most of them. The most well-known and most successful of his austere compositions is The Sinner's Guide (La Guia de Pecadores), which was released in 1555. It is distinguished by an unctuous eloquence that has made it a constant source of religious inspiration, as well as a smooth, harmonic style of the purest Spanish vernacular that has earned it the distinction of a classic. It has been compared to The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis.
