Year: 17th century
Size: 44" x 36"
Medium: Oil
Description: Huge oil on canvas representation of Mary Magdalene's conversion by an Italian Old Master artist from the 17th century. This allegory, from around 1630, depicts a private toilette scenario in which a gorgeously attired Mary takes off her jewelry. It serves both apologetic and moral reasons in keeping with the Counter Reformation. The picture depicts Mary Magdalene's initial steps toward her conversion to religion, including her decision to give up material possessions and fleeting joys and remove her priceless jewelry in favor of a simple and contemplative existence in the desert. After the Reformation, The Magdalene remained one of the most well-liked saints because she was a reformed sinner with whom it was simple to relate. Excellent condition, wrapped in a lavish gilded frame. Dimensions: About 44" x 36" framed
