A number of works were written during the eighteenth century with the intention of providing the clergy with a more or less comprehensive overview of the legal disciplines. Among these publications, [the current title] is the most elaborate; it was initially published in 1701 and had reached a fourth edition by 1747. The author was a clergyman who served as the deanery of Battel; yet, he obtained his doctor of laws degree in order to prepare him for a career as a practitioner in the ecclesiastical courts. His legal education made him, as he tells us,'soon apply'd to by his neighbours, as a person able to assist them in the many uncertainties and difficulties that daily occurred to them.' (*) The book covers the law and practice on all subjects that are helpful to clergy in fifty-nine chapters in an organized and accessible manner. Although the book is well-informed, the majority of its content comes from English judgments, legislation, and other sources, as stated on the title page, to which complete citations are provided. Despite having an LL.D., the author is undoubtedly more knowledgeable about English law than about civil or canon law "Holdsworth, History of English Law 12.
