Gaëtan Quercus (hand-colored and gold-heightened mod. armorial bookplate). 244 pages French text During the French Wars of Religion, the Satire Ménippée, also known as La Satyre Ménippée de la vertu du Catholicon d'Espagne, was a political and satirical work written in prose and verse that supported the idea of an independent but Catholic France while savagely mocking the Catholic League and Spanish pretensions. The project was a team effort involving academics, attorneys, clerics, and bureaucrats. It first surfaced at the same moment as Henry IV of France rose to power and the League was defeated. The term "menippean satire" refers to a type of carnivalesque literature that was popular in classical Greece and Rome and was composed of a free-form combination of prose, poetry, and dialogue. The Satyre Ménippée was dubbed "one of the greatest political satires of world literature" by Mikhail Bakhtin.
