Description: Vitringa Campegius [1669–1722] Apocalypsios Joannis Apostoli Anakrisis [... RESTAURANT WITH Chronotaxis Apolcalypticae Analysis nec non [... Henrici Strickii, Amstelodami, 1719–1721. 8 by 10 1/4" 4to. Red and black title, [32], 918, [64], black title, [2], 37pp. Original complete vellum binding, tooled blind. Theologian and Hebraist Campegius Vitringa Sr., sometimes known as Kempe Vitringa (1659–1722), was a Dutch Protestant. Vitringa was a prophetic theologian and a disciple of Johannes Cocceius. He received his education at the universities of Leiden and Frankfurt, where he eventually joined the faculty as an Oriental languages professor in 1681. When he searched for prophetic results, he would link happenings to the near future instead of the far future, giving special attention to the Maccabean era (2nd Century BC). Similar to Joseph Mede (1586–1638), Vitringa was adamant that the Millennium was still to come but did not anticipate any changes happening right away. He placed the end of time in the far future and placed a great emphasis on the idea of the New Jerusalem. His most significant pupil was Herman Venema (1697–1787), a Franeker theology professor. Vitringa is best known for his two books, Commentary on Isaiah (Leeuwarden, 1714–20) and his dissertation on the synagogue, De Synagoga Vetere Libri Tres (Franeker, 1685; 2d ed. 1696). The latter was the most significant addition to the exegesis of Isaiah until the time of Gesenius.
