The poem was first published in its entirety in 1532, however the earliest version dates back to 1516. Matteo Maria Boiardo's incomplete romance Orlando Innamorato (Orlando in Love, published posthumously in 1495) is continued in Orlando Furioso. It is similar to the eleventh-century Old French Chanson de Roland, which describes Roland's death, in terms of its historical location and characters. The narrative also has a chivalric romance, which has its roots in a tradition that dates back to the late Middle Ages and gained prominence in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
