Description: Paolo Giovio, "Gli Elogi vites brevamente scrtte d'huomini illustri di Guerra, antichi et moderni" (The Praise of Lives Briefly Narrated by Illustrative Men of War, Ancient and Modern...), Venice: Rossi, 1557. One of the first Italian publications of a historical book by Paolo Giovio (1483–1552), who was famous for his translations and editions of classical authors. Lodovico Domenichi (1515–1564) translated the work from Latin. A collection of condensed biographies of notable military figures from antiquity to the Renaissance is presented in this text. Text in Italian; size 4 1/8 by 6 1/4"; vellum bound; 16 pages plus 351 pages; very good condition; occasional foxing. Paolo Giovio, an Italian physician, historian, biographer, and bishop, was born in 1483 and died in 1552 (latin: Paulus Jovius).
