Description: Fine 19th century English portrait of a black border collie on the back of an armchair, oil on canvas by R B Hunter. Good quality and condition rare early depiction of the breed in art. Original unrestored condition and presented in a good gilt frame, signed. It is quite rare and special to see working dogs like Collie's portrayed as domestic pets during the period. The owners would have commissioned the portrait seeing the dog as a beloved part of their family as opposed to the tradoinal view at the time as that of a "beast of burden".
