Description: "The Country Gentleman" English School, circa 1830's oil painting on canvas, framed canvas: 36 x 28 inches frame: 40 x 32 inches. Very charming early Victorian period portrait of a country gentleman, seated in a burgundy red leather chair. His hand rests on a printed paper - suggestive of his standing in life as an educated, learned gentleman. Possibly a man of business, though most likely the 'country squire' or 'Lord of the Manor'. Condition report: the painting has been relined and restored around 40 or 50 years ago. There is quite pronounced blistering to the old varnish and crazing to the paint as well as a few scuff marks. All of which, in our opinion, add to the country character of the work.
