Description: Huge oil on canvas portrait of a George Welstead from the early 19th century, credited to George Chinnery. High-quality study of a young man standing next to a red drape wearing a black jacket, a white waistcoat, and a black cravat. artist's plaque within the frame. Based on vague markings on the back of the canvas before its relining, the plaque has likely been inserted. Based on the clothing, it is most likely from around 1845, and it should spell Macau. Thomas Richardson Colledge, a missionary surgeon employed by the British East India Company and practicing in Macau and Canton, had a son named George Welstead Colledge.
