Description: Large early 19th Century portrait of a George Welstead, oil on canvas attributed to George Chinnery. Good quality study of the young man in a black jacket, white waistcoat and black cravat beside a red drape. Framed with artists plaque. The plaque has probably been added based on indistinct notations on the back of the canvas before its reline. It is most likely circa 1845 based on the attire and should spell Macau. George Welstead Colledge was the son of missionary surgeon Thomas Richardson Colledge under the employ of the British East India Company who practised in Macau and Canton.
