Description: Large oil on canvas portrait of George Welstead from the early 19th century, attributed to George Chinnery. Excellent portrait of the young man in a black jacket, white waistcoat, and black tie standing next to a red curtain. Embedded with an artist's plaque. Indistinct notations on the back of the canvas prior to its relining suggest that the plaque was likely added. Based on the attire, it is most likely circa 1845 and should spell Macau. George Welstead Colledge was the son of British East India Company missionary surgeon Thomas Richardson Colledge, who practiced in Macau and Canton. Approximate dimensions: 34" x 29" (framed)
