Description: Large early 19th Century portrait of John Taylor, captain of the Honorable Company Of Edinburgh Golfers, oil on canvas. Excellent quality and condition portrait wearing a red tunic and top hat, about to tee off accompanied by his caddy. Would be further enhanced with a light clean. Framed. Unsigned by very similar to the composition that Watson made numerous versions of.  Measurements: 32" x 29" framed approx
Provenance: Mr and Mrs James de Rothschild;  By whom presented to the Personal Service League (according to label)  The work shows John Taylor, in his red captain's jacket, about to tee off on the original course of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers on Leith Links. In 1744 this group (then known as 'the gentlemen golfers') had drawn up the first official rules for a tournament which were to form the basis for the modern game of golf.
