Description: John Taylor, captain of the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, is depicted in a sizable oil on canvas portrait from the early 19th century. Excellent quality and condition portrait of a man prepared to tee off with his caddy while wearing a red tunic and a top hat. would benefit from a light clean to make it better. Framed. Very similar to the piece that Watson produced in a number of different versions, but unsigned. Dimensions: Approximately 32" x 29" when framed. Mr. and Mrs. James de Rothschild are the source of the gift, which they gave to the Personal Service League (according to label) The image depicts John Taylor, dressed in his red captain's jacket, getting ready to start his round on Leith Links' original course for The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The first set of official regulations for a competition that served as the inspiration for the current game of golf were created by this group, known at the time as "the gentlemen golfers," in 1744.
