Description: Superb oil on panel portrait of Martin Luther by a German Old Master from the early 16th century. A significant and earliest example of a German Renaissance portrait of the eminent theologian and protestant reformation leader. Natural craquelure in good original shape, showing the subtle wood grain lines. excellent draughtsmanship in the face's fine details, and a vivid color scheme typical of the pigments used in German Renaissance paintings. The piece may have a stronger connection to Cranach and his studio because he had a huge workshop where he produced numerous pieces of the same subject. Framed.
