Description: Large oil on canvas portrait of Robert Walpole as Secretary of War, dated to around 1708, from the Sir Godfrey Kneller workshop. Stunning three-quarter length image of the illustrious statesman who served as de facto prime minister and held the positions of secretary of war, chancellor of the exchequer, leader of the house of commons, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Walpole is depicted with the scarlet jacket and ornamental breastplate typical of the Secretary of War office, which he held until 1710.
